Halloween is a wonderful time to engage children in creative and festive activities. For child care centers, finding crafts that are age-appropriate, easy to manage and fun is key. These activities not only foster creativity but also help develop fine motor skills and encourage teamwork. You can streamline your planning and keep families engaged by sharing these fun activities and the beautiful results.

Here are five Halloween crafts perfect for your child care center. Each activity is designed to be simple, requiring common materials and straightforward steps. We’ll break down each craft with a description, a materials list, and clear instructions to help you bring these spooky and silly creations to life in your classroom.

1. Paper Plate Spiders

Craft Description

Paper plate spiders are a classic Halloween craft that children love. This activity allows kids to practice painting, cutting and gluing. The final product is a friendly, eight-legged creature that can be used to decorate your center for the Halloween season.

Materials Needed

  • Paper plates (one per child)
  • Black paint (non-toxic, washable)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Black construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors (child-safe and adult scissors)
  • Glue or stapler
  • Hole punch and string (optional, for hanging)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Spider Body: Lay out newspaper or a protective covering on your craft tables. Give each child a paper plate and let them paint the entire surface black. Set the plates aside to dry completely. This is a great time for a snack or story.
  2. Create the Legs: While the plates are drying, you can help the children prepare the spider legs. Take sheets of black construction paper and cut them into long strips, about one inch wide. You will need eight strips for each spider. For older children, you can draw lines on the paper for them to practice their cutting skills.
  3. Assemble the Spider: Once the black paint is dry, it’s time to attach the legs. You can either glue the strips to the back of the paper plate (four on each side) or use a stapler for a more secure hold. Bend the strips in the middle to create a “knee” joint, making the spider look more realistic.
  4. Add the Finishing Touches: Glue two or more googly eyes onto the front of the paper plate. Encourage the children to give their spider a unique look with multiple eyes! If you want to hang the spiders, use a hole punch to make a small hole at the top of the plate and thread a piece of string through it.

2. Ghostly Footprints

Preschool children make crafts at a table with supplies including scissors and paper.

Craft Description

This keepsake craft is a fantastic way to create a personal memento for families. By using a child’s footprint, you can make an adorable little ghost. It’s a fun sensory experience for the children and results in a decoration that parents will cherish.

Materials Needed

  • Black or dark-colored construction paper
  • White paint (non-toxic, washable)
  • Paintbrush or foam brush
  • Paper plate or paint tray
  • Black marker
  • Wet wipes or a basin of water for cleanup

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Painting Station: Pour a small amount of white paint onto a paper plate. Have your black construction paper ready. It’s best to do this craft one-on-one with each child to manage the mess and ensure a good footprint.
  2. Paint the Foot: Using a paintbrush, apply a thin, even layer of white paint to the bottom of one of the child’s feet. Make sure to cover the entire sole, from heel to toe.
  3. Make the Footprint: Gently guide the child’s foot onto the center of the black construction paper, pressing down firmly but gently to create a clear print. Carefully lift the foot straight up to avoid smudging.
  4. Clean Up and Decorate: Use wet wipes or a small basin of water to immediately clean the paint off the child’s foot. Set the paper aside to dry. Once the white paint is completely dry, use a black marker to draw two eyes and a mouth on the heel part of the footprint, transforming it into a cute ghost.

3. Cotton Ball Ghost Garland

Craft Description

This is a simple and tactile craft that is great for developing fine motor skills. Children will enjoy the soft texture of the cotton balls as they create their own friendly ghosts. Stringing them together makes a festive garland to hang across a window or doorway.

Materials Needed

  • White cardstock or thin cardboard
  • Cotton balls
  • White school glue
  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • String or yarn
  • Hole punch

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Create the Ghost Shape: On the white cardstock, draw a simple ghost outline. You can create a template for the children to trace or, for younger kids, pre-cut the shapes yourself. You’ll need several ghosts per child if you want to create a long garland.
  2. Glue the Cotton Balls: Give each child a ghost cutout and a small bowl of cotton balls. Have them spread glue over the surface of the ghost shape. They can then stick the cotton balls onto the glue, covering the entire ghost. Encourage them to pull the cotton balls apart slightly to create a fluffy, wispy texture.
  3. Add the Face: Let the glue dry. Once the cotton balls are secure, use a black marker to draw eyes and a mouth on each ghost. You can also use small circles of black paper and glue them on for a different look.
  4. String the Garland: Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of each completed ghost. Cut a long piece of string or yarn and help the children thread their ghosts onto it, leaving a bit of space between each one. Your festive ghost garland is now ready to hang!

4. Pumpkin Seed Mosaics

Boy makes a pumpkin seed mosaic.

Craft Description

This activity uses a natural material — pumpkin seeds — to create a colorful mosaic. It’s an excellent project for practicing sorting, counting and fine motor control. The dyed seeds provide a vibrant medium for children to express their creativity and you can have children paint them as well!

Materials Needed

  • Raw pumpkin seeds (rinsed and dried)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Vinegar
  • Ziploc bags
  • Paper towels
  • Cardstock or paper plates
  • White school glue
  • Pencils

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Dye the Pumpkin Seeds: This step should be done by an adult beforehand. Divide the dry pumpkin seeds into several Ziploc bags. Add a few drops of food coloring and about a teaspoon of vinegar to each bag. Seal the bags and shake them until the seeds are evenly coated. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes, then spread the seeds on paper towels to dry completely.
  2. Design the Mosaic: Give each child a piece of cardstock or a paper plate. Have them use a pencil to draw a simple Halloween shape, like a pumpkin, a cat, or a witch’s hat. You can also provide pre-printed templates.
  3. Create the Mosaic: Set out the bowls of colored pumpkin seeds. Children can then apply glue to a small section of their design and carefully place the pumpkin seeds onto the glue. Encourage them to fill in their drawing with different colors.
  4. Let it Dry: This craft requires some patience as the children place each seed. Once their design is complete, set the mosaics aside in a safe place to dry thoroughly. The result is a beautiful, textured piece of art.

5. Monster Paper Bag Puppets

Craft Description

A classic for a reason, paper bag puppets inspire imaginative play long after the crafting is done. Children can design their own unique monsters, giving them personality with various craft supplies. This activity is perfect for encouraging storytelling and social interaction.

Materials Needed

  • Brown or colored paper lunch bags
  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Googly eyes
  • Yarn, pipe cleaners, and pom-poms
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puppet Body: Give each child a paper bag. The bottom flap of the bag will serve as the monster’s head and mouth. Have them orient the bag so this flap is facing up.
  2. Decorate the Monster: Set out a variety of craft supplies on the table. Let the children’s imaginations run wild! They can use construction paper to cut out shapes for horns, teeth, or stripes. Yarn can be used for hair, pipe cleaners for antennae, and pom-poms for noses or spots.
  3. Add Eyes and a Mouth: Googly eyes are a must for any monster puppet. Let the children choose how many eyes their monster has and where to place them. They can draw a mouth on the underside of the bag’s flap so it opens and closes when they move their hand.
  4. Time to Play: Once the glue is dry, the puppets are ready for action! You can encourage the children to put on a puppet show, giving their monsters names and voices. This extends the fun and helps build communication and narrative skills.
